Fire Prevention Week 2020

Fire Prevention Week - October 4 - 10, 2020

This year’s NFPA Fire Prevention Week falls on October 4 – 10, and the theme is Serve Up Fire Safety in the Kitchen!TM  The Office of the Fire Commissioner is glad this topic was chosen since cooking is one of the leading causes of home fires and home fire injuries in British Columbia. This is our opportunity to teach people about the simple things they can do to prevent a fire from happening, from being injured and what to do if a fire starts in their kitchen.
Some of you may be disappointed to learn that the Office of the Fire Commissioner will not be providing printed resources for Fire Prevention Week this year due to a limited post-COVID-19 budget and our efforts to be more environmentally-friendly in our operations. Instead, the Office of the Fire Commissioner, Fire Prevention Officers’ Association of BC, BC Professional Fire Fighters’ Burn Fund and First Nations’ Emergency Services Society are again partnering to host a Fire Prevention Week poster and video contest for students. This year, our plan is to increase the number of prizes across each region to include all grades. A HUGE thanks to the support of our valued partners and sponsors! Contest details will be posted as they become available.
NFPA has also developed many (free!) resources to support your public education efforts, including a tip sheet on promoting FPW in your community if you’re unable to do in-person presentations. Check out the FPW toolkit for more information, and be sure to scroll down the page to see downloadable social media graphics and messages, campaign logos, activity sheets and tip sheets.
Printed resources and other Fire Prevention Week-related items will be made available through the CanOps Public Safety Resource Centre.
As always, please don’t hesitate to contact me if you have any questions or concerns.
Thank you!
