     Fire Prevention / Emergency Program (Exempt)

With the requirement to live within the municipal boundaries for this exempt position,
Summerland is a friendly town located in the heart of the Okanagan Valley with a population of
just over 12,000 residents. It offers beautiful beaches, scenic biking and hiking trails, mountains
and vineyards, and a wide variety of other activities, all with a warm and welcoming community
spirit.

Due to an upcoming retirement, the District of Summerland has an exciting opportunity for a
Deputy Fire Chief position within our Fire Department. We are seeking a well-rounded
individual with experience and training in emergency response to take a leadership role in fire
prevention and the coordination of the emergency management program. The emphasis for the
successful candidate will be the Fire Inspector / Investigator experience and considerable
knowledge of the BC Fire Code, BC Fire Service Act and Regulations, BC Building Code.

As one of the career roles within our fire department team of 5 career staff and 30 auxiliary
firefighters, the variety of work for this position further includes assuming an incident command
role in emergent situations, public education, building inspections, and providing leadership and
training assistance in a high-paced work environment. The ability to work under pressure and
demonstrate excellent interpersonal skills within the community is a must.

Ongoing availability to work a seven-day rotating, 40-hour work week which includes evenings
and weekends, and the flexibility to adjust shifts to meet operational needs, is a requirement for
this role. The successful applicant will also be required to act as the after-hours Duty Officer on
a rotational basis with other career fire department staff.
